Where To Stay
Where you want to stay depends on three things: your budget, what you want to do during your trip, and how you're getting around.
If you're relying on transit or don't have a vehicle, I strongly recommend staying in Tofino town centre. While Tofino does have a local bus service that connects some beaches, the schedule is limited, and you'll find yourself constrained by timing. In town, you can walk to restaurants, shops, tour operators, and the harbour. You can also easily arrange surf lessons, whale watching tours, and other activities that include pickup from in-town accommodations.
If you're not worried about trying every beach and you just want a relaxing coastal escape, I'd suggest picking one beachfront area and settling in for your whole stay. tin wis beach offers the best balance of beach access, nearby amenities, and that classic Tofino vibe, regardless of whether you're driving or taking the occasional taxi.
If you're travelling solo, as a couple, or as a large group. Tofino has a huge variety of types of accommodations, and larger groups can save a lot of money by booking a large cabin to share rather than multiple rooms at a hotel.
And if you ARE a completionist like us, you might want to consider moving around during your trip. Mix a night or two in town (for the food scene and convenience), a couple of nights at a beachfront spot (for those sunrise beach walks and bonfire sunsets), and maybe one night camping in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve (for the full wilderness experience). Different areas of Tofino really do feel distinct, and experiencing that variety is part of the magic.
Regardless of your travel style, this guide will help you understand all your best accommodation options in and around Tofino!
Budget Stays
Sometimes, all the careful consideration and weighing pros and cons all come down to the harsh reality of a budget. If you're just looking for the cheapest possible option (I have done this in Tofino many times), these are your best bet. Don't expect 5-star amenities, but both of these options are still clean, safe, and well-located.

Dolphin Motel
This is an old school motel and one of the cheapest options for a private room anywhere nearby. It's clean and located right next to the plaza with Tofitian Cafe and Tacofino. It's a no frills experience and once you're there you will understand why it's so cheap, but if this is coming right after a few nights of camping it will feel like a palace.Check Availability
Whalers Guesthouse
This is a great hostel with a great location right downtown. They have private rooms and dorm options. They also offer access to a shared kitchen which is a budget game changer. A shared dorm and skipping a few meals out could literally free up enough budget to pay for a tour to Hot Springs Cove!Check AvailabilityTofino Town Centre
If you're without a vehicle, staying in Tofino town centre is absolutely your best bet. Everything you need is within walking distance: restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores, surf shops, and tour operators. Most whale watching, bear watching, and hot springs tours depart from the harbour, which you can reach on foot. The town is small enough that you can walk from one end to the other in about 15 minutes.
The beaches aren't within easy walking distance from town (tin wis is the closest at about 2.5 km), but the local transit system can get you there, and many surf schools offer free pickup from town accommodations. You'll also find it much easier to experience Tofino's excellent restaurant scene when you can walk home after dinner instead of worrying about driving dark, winding roads.
There are quite a few guest houses, hotels, and cabins in town, but the best standard options are:

Hotels in town are perfect for couples who don’t mind sharing a small space, but if you’re travelling as a larger group, there are some great full homes and guest houses that are a better option. These options also usually work out to be cheaper than booking multiple rooms at the hotels.

If you're travelling with a large group and don't want to be too far from town. There are some great options just outside of town near the Tofino Brewery. All these options sleep up to 6 and are walking distance from the Brewery, so you won't need to draw straws to pick a designated driver.

tin wis Beach is one of the closest beaches to Tofino town, making it an ideal middle ground between town convenience and beachfront access. This is a family-friendly beach with generally calmer waters than some of the more exposed surf beaches, though you'll still see plenty of surfers here, especially beginners working with local surf schools.
The vibe here is relaxed and accessible. You're close enough to town (about 2.5 km) that you could bike there if you wanted, but far enough to feel like you're in a peaceful beachfront setting. The beach itself is beautiful with wide stretches of sand, rocky tide pools to explore at low tide, and those classic Tofino sunset views across the water.
This area works especially well if you're travelling with kids or if this is your first time in Tofino and you want beach access without being too remote. You're also perfectly positioned to explore both the town and the other beaches, because everything in Tofino is within a short drive.

Chesterman Beach is a stunning 2.5-kilometre stretch of sand that's divided into North Chesterman and South Chesterman by a small sandy spit (passable at low tide). Frank Island sits just offshore, and at low tide, you can walk right out to it. The beach offers excellent surfing, gorgeous sunset views, and that perfect mix of dramatic beauty and accessibility that defines the best of Tofino.
The vibe here tends to be a bit more upscale than some other beaches. You'll find some of Tofino's most beautiful beachfront properties along this stretch, and the area attracts couples on romantic getaways, families looking for a special vacation, and anyone willing to pay a bit more for that perfect beachfront location.
This is where I'd recommend staying if you're only picking one beach area. You get incredible beach access for morning walks and sunset sessions, you're close enough to town for easy restaurant access (about 5 minutes by car), and the beach itself is just spectacular.
The accommodation options here are less resorts and hotels and more cottages and full rental houses, which, in my opinion, is the best way to experience Tofino.

Cox Bay is one of Tofino's main surf beaches. If you're here primarily to catch waves (or to learn how to) this is your spot.
The vibe is younger and more active than some other areas. The beach itself is beautiful and a bit less crowded than Chesterman, with a wilder, more rugged feel.
Staying at Cox Bay makes sense if surfing is your priority, if you like being part of an active outdoor community. The sunsets here are also incredible, so if getting a sunset surf session and being walking distance to your accommodation afterwards is the Tofino moment you're after, then the Cox Beach area is the spot for you.
Just know that you're a bit further from town here (about 10 minutes by car), so you'll definitely want a vehicle if you're planning to explore restaurants and other areas.

Check AvailabilityBeach Front Cottages for Groups and Families
Travelling with the whole crew? Skip the multi-room hotel math and grab a beachfront cottage instead. These places give every age group what they want: kids can run straight from the porch to the sand, the surfers in your group can check conditions before coffee's even ready, and grandma gets her own quiet corner with an ocean view instead of a shared wall with a snoring teenager.
Most of these cottages come with full kitchens, multiple bedrooms, and enough living space that everyone isn't tripping over each other after a long beach day. And because you're splitting one place across the whole group instead of booking separate rooms, the per-person cost often works out way better than you'd expect for beachfront real estate.
These are some of the best options for groups wanting that direct beach access without sacrificing comfort:

For those who want to experience Tofino's wild side without the resort prices, camping in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve puts you right in the heart of the action. Green Point Campground is the main option within the park, sitting between Tofino and Ucluelet on Long Beach, one of the most spectacular stretches of coastline in the park.
Green Point offers 94 forested campsites for tents and RVs (no hookups), with access to flush toilets, hot showers, and potable water, which is basically as comfortable as BC camping gets. You're steps from Long Beach, where you can surf, beachcomb, or simply walk for kilometres along pristine sand. The Rainforest Trail and several other excellent hikes are nearby, and you're positioned perfectly to explore the park.
Here's what you need to know: Green Point books up FAST, especially for summer weekends and holidays. Reservations open up months in advance through the Parks Canada reservation system, and popular dates fill within hours. If you want to camp here in July or August, be ready to book the moment reservations open. Shoulder season (May-June, September-October) offers better availability and can actually be more beautiful and come with fewer crowds, dramatic weather, and still warm enough to enjoy the beaches.
If Green Point is booked, there are a few private campgrounds closer to Tofino and Ucluelet that offer alternatives, though you won't have quite the same access to the park's trails and beaches.
Camping Details:
- Green Point Campground - Parks Canada operated, reservations required March-October, some first-come-first-served sites available off-season
- Location puts you between Tofino (20 min north) and Ucluelet (20 min south)
- Access to Long Beach, Rainforest Trail, and multiple other park attractions
- Expect to pay around $30-40/night for a site
- Book through the Parks Canada reservation system
- Arrive early if you're hoping for first-come, first-served sites
Final Thoughts
Tofino really does offer something for everyone when it comes to accommodations. From bucket-list luxury to surfer-friendly energy, from walkable town convenience to remote camping under massive Douglas firs. The variety is part of what makes planning a Tofino trip so fun.
The key to getting it right is being honest about what you prioritize. Love great restaurants and want walkable access to Tofino's food scene? Stay in town. Here primarily to surf? Cox Bay puts you right on the waves. Want a romantic, immersive escape? Book a cute spot right on Chesterman Beach.
My personal recommendation? If you have the time and flexibility, don't pick just one. Mix it up. Spend a couple of nights in town soaking up the restaurant scene and grabbing coffee at the harbour. Move to a beachfront spot for sunrise walks and those incomparable Tofino sunsets. If you're adventurous, throw in a night of camping to experience the rainforest and wake up to the sound of waves on Long Beach. The variety makes the trip more memorable, and each area of Tofino has such a distinct personality that experiencing multiple areas enhances your visit.
But here's the most important piece of advice: book early. Tofino is small, and its popularity still grows each year. There simply aren't that many accommodations, and what exists books out far in advance, especially for summer. If you're planning a July or August visit, you should be booking at least 3-4 months ahead, longer if you want specific properties. Weekend availability disappears first, followed by weekdays.
That said, if summer is already booked or out of your budget, consider shoulder season or even winter. Tofino in fall is absolutely gorgeous, with smaller crowds, incredible storm watching, still totally swimmable ocean temperatures if you've got a wetsuit, and way better deals on accommodations. Winter storm watching season (November-February) is also special, with massive Pacific storms creating dramatic wave displays, and many accommodations offer storm-watching packages at reduced rates.
